Mathematics Curriculum: Intent

At Field Road Academy, our aim is for every child to become a confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematician who understands the value of mathematics in everyday life. We want our pupils to develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts, vocabulary and procedures, while also developing the ability to think critically, make connections and apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations.

We believe that mathematics is much more than learning rules and procedures. Our curriculum is designed to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, enabling children to understand not only how to complete a calculation, but why mathematical methods work and when they should be used.

We aim to develop children who are willing to take risks, learn from mistakes and persevere when faced with challenge. Through high-quality teaching and carefully sequenced learning, we provide all pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make strong mathematical progress and become successful mathematicians.

 Mathematics Curriculum: Implementation

At Field Road Academy, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of work, supplemented by other high-quality teaching resources and approaches. This provides a carefully sequenced curriculum which supports children to build their mathematical understanding over time, revisit important concepts and make connections between different areas of mathematics.

Lessons provide opportunities for children to develop the three key areas of mathematics:

  • Fluency – developing accuracy, efficiency and confidence with mathematical facts, concepts and procedures.
  • Reasoning – explaining mathematical thinking, making connections and justifying solutions using appropriate mathematical vocabulary.
  • Problem solving – applying mathematical understanding to solve problems, including those presented in unfamiliar contexts.

We place a strong emphasis on children applying their mathematical understanding to reasoning and problem-solving activities in order to deepen and embed their learning. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, compare different methods, identify errors, justify their answers and find more than one possible solution.

 2. Real-World Contexts and Problem-Solving Opportunities

Our teaching provides regular opportunities for children to encounter real-world contexts and meaningful problem-solving opportunities, helping them to understand how mathematics is used beyond the classroom. We also promote practical skill development, particularly when introducing new concepts, allowing children to use concrete resources, representations and practical experiences before progressing towards more abstract mathematical thinking.

 3. Links with Other Subjects

Our mathematics curriculum is also connected meaningfully with other areas of the curriculum, allowing children to recognise the importance and versatility of mathematics across their learning. For example, pupils may use measurement in science, data handling in geography, scale and proportion in art and design, or mathematical reasoning when exploring real-world issues.

4. Inclusive and Adapted Provision

We are committed to providing an inclusive and adaptive mathematics curriculum in which all children are supported and challenged to achieve their potential. Teachers adapt learning, resources, questioning, representations and levels of challenge in response to pupils' needs. Appropriate scaffolding and concrete and visual resources are used where required, while opportunities for greater depth and increased challenge ensure that children who are ready to extend their thinking are able to do so.

 5. Assessment, Feedback and Reflection

Assessment, feedback and reflection are integral to our mathematics teaching. Teachers continually assess pupils' understanding through questioning, discussion, observation and children's work. This information is used to identify misconceptions, address gaps and adapt future teaching. Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning, consider what they have found challenging and learn from mistakes, helping them to become increasingly independent and reflective learners.

Throughout the year we also use summative assessment to assess the children's understanding and retention of what they have learnt in order to identify where additional support and learning opportunities are needed.

 Mathematics Curriculum: Impact

Children at Field Road Academy develop a secure and increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematics. They become confident in using mathematical vocabulary, selecting appropriate methods and applying their knowledge to a range of contexts.

Pupils are able to demonstrate fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, rather than simply recalling procedures. They can explain their mathematical thinking, justify their answers, make connections between concepts and apply what they have learned to new and unfamiliar situations.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through ongoing formative assessment, pupil work, progress over time, end-of-unit assessments and statutory and non-statutory assessments. We also monitor pupils' engagement, confidence and attitudes towards mathematics.

Ultimately, we want every child to leave Field Road Academy believing that everyone can be a mathematician. Our pupils should have the knowledge, skills, resilience and confidence to use mathematics successfully in their future education and in the wider world.

Celebrating Success in Mathematics

At Field Road Academy, we believe that mathematical success should be celebrated and shared. We provide a range of opportunities for children to develop their confidence, recognise their achievements and inspire others to enjoy mathematics.

Our Maths Ambassadors play an important role in promoting a positive mathematical culture across the school. They act as role models for their peers, demonstrate enthusiasm for mathematics and help to celebrate the achievements of other pupils. Our Chief Banker also plays an important role within our School Bank, supporting our wider approach to developing our children's understanding of financial literacy, money and real-world mathematical skills.

Each week, children take part in our Badge Club challenges, giving pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical knowledge and skills through a range of engaging challenges. Children who successfully complete challenges can earn badges and prizes, providing an additional incentive to persevere, practise and take pride in their mathematical achievements.

We also use Times Table Rock Stars to promote the fluency and rapid recall of multiplication facts. Regular practice is supported through exciting school competitions and challenges, encouraging children to improve their speed, accuracy and confidence while celebrating individual and class success.

Through these opportunities, we aim to create a school culture where mathematics is valued, enjoyed and celebrated, and where children are motivated to challenge themselves and take pride in their progress.

If you want further information about the curriculum content your child is covering please speak to your child's Class Teacher or call the school office to arrange an appointment to see the subject leader, Mrs F Harris.
